Love Can Change A Cat: The Story of Miss Kitty

My boyfriend and I moved into a new house together and I always had a cat growing up living with my parents back home. My boyfriend was a big dog person and his mom has a small allergy to cats so it took some convincing on my part to adopt a cat. I wanted to adopt a cat because we both have full time jobs and it would have been hard to raise a kitten and the idea of rescuing a cat just made me feel nice, knowing that one more cat wouldn’t be stuck in a small old house any longer. The scary part about adopting is that you never know what you’re going to get in a cat, their disposition, personality and everything. I looked online for rescues near us that had cats. After weeks of searching, I knew she was the one as soon as I saw her name: Kitty.

My parents have a cat named Mr. Kitty and I thought how cute! Mr and Miss Kitty! I showed her picture to my boyfriend and he thought she was pretty and we sent in a request to adopt her! There was a lot paperwork and back and forth and after about 3 weeks she was officially ours! I was so happy.

The first month is definitely the hardest, like I said before, you never know what you’re going to get when you adopt, but I promise it’s always worth it. The woman who we got her from said she was iffy with dogs, never tries to go outside, likes other cats and all this stuff, which makes me sad because she couldn’t have been more wrong. Just in the time we were standing in the shelter waiting to sign the paperwork, she swiped at another cat in the cage.

When we took her home, she got to meet our dog and she instantly loved him, she would rub up on him and lay with him; and the most difficult of all, she’s so curious of the outdoors she runs out whenever she can. All I know about her previous owner was he had her for about a year and a half and had to give her up because he moved. I’m used to my parents cat being so affectionate and asking for love and she wasn’t like that at all. She very much dislikes being picked up and she very, very rarely ever sits in your lap or climbs on you. She might put one paw on you but that’s as far as she would go. I’m so afraid her previous owner abused her and that’s why she’s like that. I’ve been trying so hard to show her love and affection and even now sometimes she’ll let me hold her.

It’s such a wonderful feeling when you breakthrough with an animal like that. We’ve had her about 3 and half months and she’s so full of life, playful and talkative! Even some days she’ll lay next to me in bed and my heart just feels so happy. I love her with all my heart and I hope everyone who adopts will be able to have this feeling as well. – Miss Kitty’s Mom
